My recommended Book and Movie list………

My recommended Book and Movie list………

Recommended books that may help you along the journey of self-discovery……..

baby_reading_book.

I have always been an avid reader; spending a whole day curled up on the sofa in between the franticness of an active childhood was nothing strange to me. My mum was and is the very same; only she quite literally devours books at the speed of lightening, and she is my go to person for a perfect spelling and grammar check.

My fabulous Mum Heather

Books are where you lose yourself as a child and live a double life. I travelled far and wide; Mary O’Hara transported me to the great plains of Wyoming in My Friend Flicka and other novels, I was transported into The Enchanted Woods by Enid Blyton and then became a member of The Famous 5; I travelled with Toad in The Wind in the Willows, fell in love with The Fox cub Bold and The Animals of Farthing Wood, and I sailed boats in balmy summers in Swallows and Amazons. And who forgets Peter Rabbit? My childhood is mile stoned by books when I wasn’t out creating my own adventures with my brothers.

“I think the irony is that as we become adults we lose ourselves to a double life of others expectations, should do’s and must be’s, only to later re-find ourselves in books.”

We all have a very personal journey with books, and so my list really can only reflect what I have been drawn to and found helpful for me or helpful for my clients. I am incredibly time stressed so my love of reading books and the amount read in the past years sadly isn’t reflected in the vast number of books I have on my shelves. I will someday, get through them all, they all speak to me and when the time is right I will learn their mysteries, lessons and insights.

Books that I have found helpful on my own journey and that I recommend to various clients include the following. I cannot promise to have read each from front to back; however I have found some gems within these books which helped me with what I was after in the moment.

The secret to the following books is to read what you are drawn to; don’t ask questions or analyse the front or back too much. With books there is a magic far more special than logic can define, I am convinced that the book chooses you…..

Follow the links for the books that you are drawn to and see if this one ‘fits’ for you as you read through the description; or just follow your gut. Don’t forget that amazon sells thousands of second hand or nearly new books on Amazon market place, so helping you to keep your costs down.

books reading

There has been many times writing this list that I have wanted to give up, there are so many books that have crossed my path and this task was really taking it out of me to compile them all! However if I give up now I may have missed the book that reaches out to you. As the list is so extensive I suggest speed reading through and stopping where you feel drawn. I hope that you find a reawakening in some of the following books, and the answers that you seek, for the moment. Please do add your own recommendations to this list for other readers.

“Remember that the answers, truly are within you; the greats that have put pen to paper are human too, and in reality only a few steps ahead. Start to trust in your own great vault of inner wisdom, awakened by the words you may find in the writings here.”

With love

The following are in no particular order of preference; only what I am remembering more easily than others! Remember that it is not the books destination that counts but the journey. You are perfect as you are now; you don’t need fixing by a book. Being present and mindful doesn’t take books to learn it is simply being where you are right now and enjoying the wonders, insights, ah-has, and flowing with the emotions as they flow through you while reading. Don’t be scared that some may appear spiritual, for spiritual in the true sense of the word excludes none and includes all. Although many books may reference God or spiritualism, please don’t see this as something to create separation but unity. I will not attempt to describe what this is, only to add that to me, it is the universal language of love and goodness that connects us all as ONE and creates the power within everyone to understand our journey, our purpose and to heal.

1. The Alchemist by Paulo Coehlo

the-alchemist

This book is truly special and while listening to it on audio, many moments I had tingles going right through me with the power and truths of the words. I love the following quotes especially:

paulo 2

“To realize one’s destiny is a person’s only obligation.”

paulo

“You have told me about your dreams, about the old king and your treasure. And you’ve told me about omens. So now, I fear nothing, because it was those omens that brought you to me. And I am part of your dream, a part of your Personal Legend, as you call it. That’s why I want you to continue toward your goal. If you have to wait until the war is over, then wait. But if you have to go before then, go on in pursuit of your dream. The dunes are changed by the wind, but the desert never changes. That’s the way it will be with our love for each other. Maktub,” she said. “If I am really a part of your dream, you’ll come back one day.” (p. 97)

2. Frequency, the Power of Personal Vibration by Penney Peirce

frequency by Penny Pierce

There are so many moments while reading this book when I wondered was this book just written for me; Chapter 5 in particular. This book is not for the novice in the journey to self, it is however one that will push you leaps and bounds and explain so much if you are prepared to challenge your beliefs, open your mind, examine your patterns and behaviours and are ready to shed the cords pulling you back to your past and the worries of the future preventing you living a complete and happy life. It is worth reading this slowly and reflectively; one of the best books I have read in a while with plenty of ah-ha moments.

“As you reach the crescendo of the clearing phase of the transformation process, life can become intense and chaotic and sometimes look hopeless. The old isn’t working; you may feel self-sacrificing, unimaginative, and unable to move forward. You’ve shifted the emphasis just enough from fear to love that your old reality has destabilized and the new reality of your soul is starting to break through. At this point, your life may malfunction and you may have to let go of goals, possessions, people, or parts of your lifestyle. You may lose whole aspects of your identity, your motivation and direction, and your comfortable habits. It’s important to not backtrack into more fight-or-flight reactions. What’s really happening is that your soul is saying, “You are not this old, limited self anymore. It’s time to discover who you really are and what you can do.” This is the point where the phoenix lights itself on fire and mysteriously turns to gold. It’s where you come face to face with the choices of who you really want to be.”……”The magical turning point in the transformation process happens when you stop paying attention to your old world, with all its hectic busyness and clutter, and shift your full attention to how your soul might recreate everything. The challenge here is that from your point of view within the hectic busyness, it looks like if you stop or let go, you’ll lose everything, fall into a void, and possibly fail and die. This, of course, is the ego’s crazy, desperate view, not the souls. When it seems like you’re facing emptiness, you’re really about to find yourself again in the new and better way.

3. The Four Agreements; A practical Guide to Personal Freedom. A Toltec Wisdom Book by Don Miguel Ruiz

the four agreements

This is a lovely book which despite its deceptively short length of 138 pages is steeped in wisdom. The lessons are simple, yet liberating. A must read.

4-agreements

Ruiz has also authored, The Voice of Knowledge: A Practical Guide to Inner Peace, which I also recommend to clients.

“We talk to ourselves constantly and most of the time we say things like. “Oh, I look fat, I Look ugly. I’m getting old, I’m losing my hair. I’m stupid, I never understand anything. I will never be good enough, and I’m never going to be perfect.’ Do you see how we use the word against ourselves? We must begin to understand what the word is and what the word does. If you understand the first agreement, be impeccable with your word, you begin to see all the changes that can happen in your life. Changes first in the way you deal with yourself, and later in the way you deal with other people, especially those you love the most…….

Use the word in the correct way. Use the word to share your love. Use white magic, beginning with yourself. Tell yourself how wonderful you are, how great you are. Tell yourself how much you love yourself. Use the word to break all those teeny, tiny agreements that make you suffer.”

4. The Celestine Prophecy, an adventure, by James Redfield

This book was recommended to me approximately 2 years ago and sat on my shelf all the while various people asked me had I read the Celestine Prophecy. I would shake my head and say “not yet”. So finally, and under duress, I read the book this year and all I can say is perfect timing. Books truly do choose you and this book for me was perfectly timed with everything that is moving and grooving in my life. Although written as a fictional book I do see how this book has application for many who are open spiritually to see the insights and personal messages.

I love the book and for someone who is consumed in work with little time to read; I made the time. And I will read this book again, and again, and again. This book is so much more than fiction and if you are open to it, may add many layers to how you see, experience, and navigate life. I have bought copies for several family members as stocking fillers for Christmas….I guess we shall see how they feel about the book. Everyone who has read that book, that I know, has loved it.

5. Eckhart Tolle
I cannot recommend more highly all the books written by Eckhart Tolle, notably A New Earth, The Power of Now: A Guide to Spiritual Enlightenment and Stillness Speaks: Whispers of Now.

A New Earth: Awakening to your Life’s Purpose, by Eckhart Tolle

“No matter what you have or get, you won’t be happy. You will always be looking for something else that promises greater fulfilment, that promises to make your incomplete sense of self complete and fill that sense of lack you feel within…..

When you yield internally, when you surrender, a new dimension of consciousness opens up. If action is possible or necessary, your action will be in alignment with the whole and supported by creative intelligence, the unconditional consciousness which in a state of inner openness you become one with. Circumstances and people then become helpful, cooperative. Coincidences happen. If no action is possible, you rest in the peace and inner stillness that comes with surrender. You rest in God.”

10. Many Lives, Many Masters: The true story of a prominent psychiatrist, his young patient and the past-life therapy that changed both their lives by DR. Brian Weiss.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/0749913789/ref=oh_details_o03_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

This book feels very personal to me, as my first experiences with past lives were also through a client named Catherine. This book helped me understand, accept, and feel more comfortable with the start of my incredible journey with my patients on a completely new level; that of the soul. The book reads as a true life story with many beautiful insights into the journey of the human through each life-time. Again, this book is one that fell into my life with absolute synchronicity; a beautiful book.

“Our body is just a vehicle for us while we’re here. It is the soul and our spirit that last forever.”

11. Beyond Fear, by Dorothy Rowe

This is a wonderful book that has the power to unshackle many from the belief that mental health problems such as depression, anxiety and fear are something to be ashamed of and how to move forward. As Sue Townsend says on the cover “Dorothy Rowe is the calm voice of reason in an increasingly mad world. Buy this book.”

And from her webpage: http://www.dorothyrowe.com.au/
Dorothy Rowe is a world-renowned psychologist and writer.
She has shown how we each live in a world of meaning that we have created out of our past experiences. She applies this understanding to important aspects of our lives, including emotional distress, happiness, growing old, religious belief, politics, money, friends and enemies, extraverts and introverts, parents, children and siblings, and most recently, why we lie.

Her work liberates us from the bamboozling lies that many mental health professionals, politicians, media and business people tell in order to keep us in our place and themselves in power.
From the book: “What psychologists should be telling people is that drug’s do not change the way we think, nor do they make anyone be nice to you or love you, nor do they solve your problems at work or in your love life, nor do they change your memories or an unhappy childhood into memories. Drugs can make you richer, but only if you buy shares in drug companies. They can sometimes, in some circumstances, take the edge off your misery or calm you down, and there could be circumstances where this would be worth doing, but only if you have made sure that you have informed yourself fully about these drugs. This is not easy to do because much of what is presented in the psychiatric system as fact is really propaganda, carefully crafted fictions.” (p192).

“When we have learned to tolerate uncertainty and to trust ourselves, we know how to sit quietly in the garden. Tolerance of uncertainty and trust in ourselves allow new ideas to develop, ideas that are not driven by pride and fear but which allow us to be ourselves ad to live our lives fully and freely, beyond fear.” (p640).

Other recommended books by Dorothy Rowe include:

 • Depression: The Way Out of Your Prison
• Dorothy Rowe’s Guide to Life
• The Successful Self
• The Courage to Live: Discovering Meaning in a World of Uncertainty

12. Walking on the Wind: Cherokee Teachings for Healing Through Harmony and Balance and also Medicine of the Cherokee: The Way of Right Relationship both by Michael Garrett

I absolutely loved the wisdom and peace that I drew from this book; highly recommended if you have a special connection with nature.

“To be a Medicine person, you have to experience everything, live life to the fullest. If you don’t experience the human side of everything, how can you help, teach, or heal? To be a good Medicine person, you’ve got to get humble. You’ve got to be lower than a worm and higher than an eagle. Archie Fire Lame Dear, Lakota Medicine Man.”

“Cherokee spiritual beliefs focus on the necessity of harmony and balance by emphasising that:

1. Everything is alive
2. Everything has purpose
3. All things are connected
4. We can embrace the Medicine of all living things as we are all walking together in the Circle

Central to the Cherokee spiritual tradition is the importance of ‘relation’ as a total way of existing in the world. This power of relation is symbolised by the Circle of Life, represented in the customs, traditions, and artforms of our people. This Circle of Life is believed to consist of spirit, nature, body, and mind, referred to as the Four Winds of Life (or the Four Directions). The Circle thus reflects not only the inter-relationships of all living beings, but the natural progression or growth of life itself. Harmony and balance are necessary for the survival or all life, and proper relations can never be emphasized enough in the traditional way……….
When we honour the Circle, we honor all that is. All that has ever been, and all that ever will be.”

13. You Can Heal your Life, by Louise Hay.

I highly recommend this book as a start to understanding how your mind and body are connected and how many of our symptoms and dis-ease relate to and start on an emotional level. Louise provides helpful explanation and guidance with many examples from her own professional career and life. I particularly found the chapter on prosperity to be helpful as this is my own stumbling block. I find it interesting that I concur with much of her advice and conclusions in other chapters such as the body, relationships and in her symptom list. I do feel that we know a lot more currently about how emotions and trauma manifest in the body and so a gifted therapist can expand significantly on the probable causes of many health problems as detailed in this book by Louise Hay. This book is a super start to help you figure out, release, and heal many symptoms in the body and I recommend this book to all of my clients as essential reading.

louise hay

“I believe we create every so-called illness in our body. The body, like everything else in life, is a mirror of our inner thoughts and beliefs. The body is always talking to us, if we only take the time to listen. Every cell within your body responds to every single thought you think and every word you speak.”

I also recommend Self-esteem Affirmations: Motivational Affirmations for Building Confidence and Recognizing Self-worth, by Louise hay and All Is Well: Heal Your Body with Medicine, Affirmations and Intuition by Louise L. Hay and Mona Schulz MD PhD. These titles are available on amazon as well as many of her other works .

16. Carol Tuttle

“When we are focusing on what is in our best interest and what creates more joy in our lives, we feel good. When we are focusing on what we don’t want and that which will lead to more pain and upset, we feel bad. It is a simple formula that can be very, very accurate if we allow it to be fine-tuned and then use it.
Choose to feel good more and more of the time. The most important task you have every day is to stay in a place of feeling good. When we are in a place of feeling good we are in a high-frequency vibration that attracts more and more of what brings us joy. Your spirit-self knows the perfect plan for your life. All you have to do is stay in a place of feeling good to allow the plan to unfold effortlessly and continue to take form in your life.” (Remembering Wholeness, 56-57)

Carol Tuttle is another extraordinary lady. I have seen her speak several times on DVDs, and YouTube clips and I have invested in some of her online works. I have not read her books, yet; however I would expect them to be incredibly helpful.

From her page: Carol Tuttle, MRET, is an electrifying catalyst for healing who has devoted her life to helping people rise out of deprivation into overflowing abundance. She literally wakes up people’s souls to living so they realize their greatness. She has a gift for identifying blocks and patterns that are keeping a person stuck and uses her evolving intuitive gifts and clearing techniques to reconnect people with their spirit truth and life purpose. She shares, “The healing technologies I am working with make traditional therapy look like a covered wagon. People are ready and eager to heal their personal pain and generational issues, and we have been blessed with the knowledge and tools now to make that possible.”

Carol is widely recognized for helping thousands of people. Her patient triumphs are legendary. As an acclaimed alternative psychotherapist, Carol is a leader in the areas of Energy Psychology, Emotional Freedom Technique and Energy Medicine. Her reputation as a psychological intuitive and energy therapist has taken her to other countries where she has been called upon to work with the native people to clear the generational beliefs and life patterns that are keeping them stuck in oppression.

Carol is the best-selling author of the highly acclaimed spiritual self-help book, Remembering Wholeness: A Personal Handbook for Thriving in the 21st Century. Sales of Remembering Wholeness continue to climb through its word of mouth popularity. It is the only self-help book that bridges the gap between energy healing, metaphysics, and Christianity.

17. Tuesdays with Morrie, an old man, a young man, and life’s greatest lesson, by Mitch Albom

18. Feel the Fear And Do It Anyway: How to Turn Your Fear and Indecision into Confidence and Action, by Susan Jeffers

I have this book in paperback and as audio; I highly recommend it for persons struggling with feeling stuck, suffering with anxiety, procrastination or just feel like you are holding yourself back. As written on the back cover, ‘With understanding and humour, Dr. Jeffers shows you how to become powerful in the face of your fears – and enjoy the elation of living a creative, joyous, loving life”.

“The biggest pitfall as you make your way through life is impatience. Remember that being impatient is simply a way of punishing yourself. It creates stress, dissatisfaction, and fear. Whenever your Chatterbox is making you feel impatient, ask it, ‘What’s the rush? It’s all happening perfectly. Don’t worry. When I am ready to move forward I will. In the meantime I am taking it all in and I am learning.’”

lynne-mctaggart-thought

Lynne McTaggart is an amazing lady that has done superb work to help us understand the power of our minds and intentions to create change in our world. I was blessed to meet Lynne over 10 years ago at a training day in the UK and she left a strong impression on me that even I had a capacity to make change in the world. This is the sign of someone special, someone that can create self-belief strong enough for changes to start happening.

Lynne is a best-selling author, researcher and lecturer whose work has been described as “a bridge between science and spirituality”. For the past 20 years she has been researching medicine and its shortcomings, and quantum physics and what this means for you and the world we live in. For more info see her webpage http://www.lynnemctaggart.com/ and her authored books here .

• The Bond: Connecting Through the Space Between Us
• The Intention Experiment: Use Your Thoughts to Change the World

24. Greg Braden
Greg Braden is an author whom I have a lot of respect for. I have purchased, however not yet read, the following books and I am looking forward to getting stuck in. His works are highly recommended, especially if you have an interest in the new age of ‘Energy’ Medicine.

Braden has other works also available on amazon that look highly interesting; I have listened to Fractal Time. I found it to be interesting, however it just failed to fire me up sufficiently once I understood the principle of his writings. Perhaps this reflects more on me than him; or perhaps it just wasn’t for me!

The Spontaneous Healing Of Belief: Shattering the Paradigm of False Limits

Divine Matrix: Bridging Time, Space, Miracles, and Belief

Gregg Braden’s Music from the Divine Matrix: Opening the Heart, Healing the Soul
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Gregg-Bradens-Music-Divine-Matrix/dp/1604076321/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1374484726&sr=8-1&keywords=music+from+the+divine+matrix

There are many YouTube clips of Greg available, for example:

“Perhaps one of the most powerful keys to determining our experience of the months ahead comes from a shift in thinking that invites us beyond asking, “What can I get from the world that exists,” to asking, “What can I offer to the world that is awakening?” The way we answer this question as individuals becomes our collective answer to what comes next. Greg Braden”

26. Dr. Michael R. Smith
I have found Michael Smith’s works to be extremely helpful for both myself and my clients. Many persons suffering health symptoms are unaware that often these relate to the fact that they are highly sensitive or empathic. Michaels work helps you to not only understand how your emotions and physical symptoms relate to what you are picking up from the world but also how to learn skills to not only survive, but thrive. Michael’s webpage is http://www.empathconnection.com/ and contains numerous helpful free articles. Recommended works include:

• Empath Intuition: Using Your Body as an Oracle, by Dr. Michael R. Smith [Audiobook]
• The Empath Experience: Shifting the Paradigm, by Dr. Michael R. Smith [Audiobook]
• Navigating 2012: Thriving in Earth’s New Age
• Awakening the Genesis Within (Volume 1)

27. Allowing by Holly Riley

I highly recommend this book to all clients and especially those suffering with gastrointestinal problems. Here is Holly speaking

28. Sandra Anne Taylor
I really like the style of writing by Sandra, for what can feel like a scary and abstract topic, she brings belief, understanding and a feeling of comfort. Her webpage is here http://www.sandrataylor.net/ and booklist here .

I recommend:
• The Hidden Powers of Your Past Lives: Revealing and Healing Your Encoded Consciousness
• Quantum Success: The Astounding Science of Wealth and Happiness

29. Jeff Brown

I have been following Jeff on Facebook  for a few years now and the beauty of his words cease to inspire me. Jeff has a beautiful way of writing that captures the heart from him to the reader. His books may be found here on his webpage and here is the trailor for his movie documentary Karmageddon

And here is a nice list of Sci-Fi books that may blow your socks off:

30. Dr. Elaine Aron

I am currently reading Dr Aron’s book called “The Highly Sensitive Person in Love” and am really enjoying her scientific approach to the topic of sensitivity. One to buy if you are a highly sensitive or empathic person OR if your loved one is. Her webpage is here should you like to read and explore more on this topic.

31. The Narcissistic Family

the narcissistic family

There is a nice review of this insightful book here in Psychology Today:

If you are confused about your own people pleasing tendencies, need for external approval, and even your own feelings, I suggest you read The Narcissistic Family: Diagnosis and Treatment by Stephanie Donaldson-Pressman and Robert M. Pressman. (http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-Narcissistic-Family-Diagnosis-Treatment/dp/1480590193).

I am currently quarter way through this book and can see how incredibly helpful this book may be for so many patients of mine; highly recommended.

Movies, DVDs, and YouTube

Recommended spiritual DVDs and YouTube clips that have inspired me greatly or are on my hotlist include the following (many have their own websites and I encourage you to have a look and YouTube is a veritable treasure trove containing far too many treasures to mention; I have listed several here http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL0C2bVccmwPZSdLuRG_S2zw37ld2uQI32):

Our Journey Home the Movie

Here is a nice mash-up of final quotes from this movie:

Change your focus to being of service rather than what’s in it for me.
Deal with everyone in your life with compassion and respect.
If you take up a practice whatever it is, for example meditation, sun gazing or gardening; whatever it is that allows you to find that place of stillness where you can ask questions you’ll get answers.

Live in your heart; live in your heart centre. Be true to yourself in every moment that you are breathing. Do what you love; be with the people that you love.

Be yourself and not in a blissed out, artificial, ecstatic way but in a way that is authentic to self and open and honest with others. Be heart revealing and soul bearing. Be truly present in your physical body honouring them and you. We aren’t meant to be floating around out there that’s why we are here. That’s why we have a physical body. We are here to experience physicality and all of the beautiful things this entails; food, sex, children, nature, rain, etc.

Reconnect with Mother Nature. Reconnect to your true essence. Get out of technology and into nature. (technology is a form if control).

Be grateful for who you are, and where you are, and all the lessons life and those around you teach you.

Just be happy

Everyone is important; everyone has a purpose.
Be happy for where you are right now.
