I can help YOU heal….

To heal complex health problems we must look at everything and this starts with the gut…

This will be a short post!

I deal with chronic and complex health problems almost daily in my clinic. To solve complex health problems such as fatigue, fibromyalgia, gastrointestinal issues, modern complex conditions such as Lyme’s disease and post-viral syndromes, auto-immune issues and functional issues that we are told to live with, requires getting to the bottom of everything to the core of what is really going on.

I can help!

THIS is what I am good at, and why is probably a function of a mixture of my nature (wanting to know why in every possible way!), my training (pharmacy, nutritional therapy, and functional medicine training all lead to the desire to get to the core of the issue and treat from there) and my passion (I want you to feel not only better but well in all that this means for you).

The internet and social media is where people turn to for answers and I wont even attempt to try to answer all your questions here about why you are unwell because this is so very complex and so highly individual that to attempt to will miss many factors unique to you.

Google will not diagnose nor treat your problems; you have to let go and start to trust someone who has the science, the knowledge, the wisdom and the passion to want to truly help empower you with the tools to heal. I may, or may not be that person; only you will know this.

So all I can offer really is this:

My word!

That I care and will do everything I know to help you on your journey back to health.

That I am continually studying to ensure that I am up to date on all relevant and important research in all these fields.

That I understand your concerns, anxiety and at times inability to trust that we can do this because I know just how overwhelming it feels when chronic ill-health strikes.

That although what I may ask you to do seems simple and easy it is based on a lot of research, study, and expense on my behalf to ensure that I am doing the very best job possible.

That I want to listen to you; how you describe your journey with your health is of crucial important.

That I am here 100% to support you.

Chronic health issues suck, and happen as a result of many complex and intertwining factors that start as far back as before our birth, to the antibiotics we received as a child, the stress that we suffered at times in our lives, the appendix or tonsils surgery, to that gastritis bug we suffered on holidays or the accident we had, and on and on. Then add to this our lifestyle and diet choices, ongoing stress, our genetic weak sports, where we live and we start to see that things are complex.

My job is to make it simple. You effectively employ me to be your health detective, and then your advisor and guide, and from there hopefully your friend and support system.

Have a think about the following triggers and if you feel that I can help using a combination of the skills that I am fortunate to have (science, medicine, nutrition and herbs, healing and a giant heart) then please do contact me.

Love,

Andrea

Essential Oils to Heal and Seal the Gut

Here is a lovely article from Jodi of Vibrant Blue Oils on the use of aromatherapy oils to assist the healing of the gut and support optimal function. I highly recommend adding aromatherapy to other approaches that we use in the clinic when treating gastrointestinal issues.

I stock all these oils for clients to use as part of their consultation; so you can see and experience these oils before purchasing for yourself.

METAPHYSICAL CAUSES OF IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME (IBS)

This is a must read for sufferers of gastro problems.

Ravenstarshealingroom's Blog

*It’s only been recently discovered by Dr. Habba, that gallbladder problems could mimic the causes of IBS.  People who experience violent diarrhea immediately after or during a meal, (especially fatty foods) may be suffering from Habba Syndrome caused by an ‘irritable’ gallbladder.

Metaphysically, little annoyances, emotions or attitudes can irritate and create an imbalance in the gallbladder.  People affected most are those who don’t like changes, especially to their daily habits and those who are overly stressed by tests and exams.  You could say their great anxiety ‘wrenches’ their bowels.

The liver is the organ that produces bile salts when you eat (bile salts help to digest fat) but when the gallbladder’s upset it doesn’t process bile well, causing the body to work feverishly to dilute the bile by adding water in the intestinal tract – the reaction – violent trots.

Andrea’s recommended Mind-Body exercises and some thoughts on how to switch between disconnection from our bodies into greater connection and appreciation of our body’s state of health and also how to gain perspective and awareness when we become overly concerned and hypervigilent in our bodies.

We tend to flit between the two when we are struggling with health problems of a chronic nature.

Please practice this exercise often with whatever tweaks feel right to you.

Much love

Andrea.

Personalised diets based on computer algorithms and gene or gut microbiome tests?

Hi folks,
I am not going to over-write in this little blog. I merely want to prompt you into some deep thinking about the following while I highlight some cool research that has been in the news:
and more here on the personalised nutrition project
dna
In a nutshell we can if we like soon look to science and technology to tell us what to do when it comes to food…. and hope and trust that it knows more than Momma Nature and the innate healing wisdom within.
I am not dismissing this research for one moment, I think the more we can learn the more awesome this journey is for all of us; however I also believe that we are far smarter than we think at learning what works for us in health and wellness….. once encouraged, empowered and educated to get us started along this health adventure.
I want to ask you to pause a moment and ask yourself some questions:

It almost always starts in the gut….

Functional Diagnostic testing can be incredibly helpful in the diagnostic work up of patients suffering with chronic health problems….

scientist

Do you suffer from any of the following problems?

  • Chronic gastrointestinal problems such as IBS, post-infectious IBS, leaky gut, food allergies, food sensitivity, histamine intolerance, inflammation, ulcers, leaky gut, Crohns disease, Ulcerative colitis, etc.?
  • Skin problems such as acne, rosacea, psoriasis, itchy skin, hives, eczema, or urticaria?
  • Chronic fatigue syndrome or Fibromyalgia?
  • Autoimmune conditions such as arthritis
  • Elevated cholesterol or heart disease (may be linked to certain microbes)
  • Thyroid problems
  • Elevated levels of toxic metals?
  • Depression, anxiety, or other central nervous system conditions
  • Food allergies, gluten intolerance, or multiple chemical sensitivities?
  • the list goes on and on and many conditions may seem very far removed from the health of the gut and the functioning of the local immune system in the gut; but they are not! See here for a nice review on Dysbiosis of the gut microbiota in disease

And have you had exposure to any of these?

  • Antibiotics as a child
  • Multiple courses of antibiotics as an adult
  • Severe food poisoning or gastro bugs or gastro-flu
  • History of foreign travel
  • Well water or exposure to water of questionable quality
  • Oral contraceptive pill, stomach acid blockers/ proton pump inhibitors, or steroid medication exposures
  • High stress levels
  • Poor diet; notably high intake of sugar or foods containing antibiotics or glycophosphates (e.g. processed wheat), or alcohol
  • Pets and farm animals

It may be easier than you think to diagnose a significant causative factor to your chronic health problems…

Histamine Intolerance whaaaaaaaaaaa???

Hi Folks,

I am sharing a superb article about Histamine Intolerance, MTHFR and Methylation by Dr Lynch, so that you can better educate yourself on this condition.

tummy

As most of you know I am a veritable library of knowledge and research and I am continually reading and researching. I don’t however have time to get all this knowledge down on blogs and into paper as I prefer to spend the time practically working with you. So I do tend to refer you on, often to articles like this, such that you can read the very best advice that is out there to further your own education and hence empower you along this journey back to health so that you in truth don’t need me for very long!

“my goal is to support you along the way; for as long as it takes for me to guide you back to health and then to assist you in learning the tools to restore and then maintain health…

Not a great business plan for me; and all in your best interest!!”

Allergies such as food allergies and histamine intolerance (and gluten intolerance) can be a nightmare to navigate for patients. I see so many people coming into the office after years of searching, having incurred mega financial expenditure, and attended numerous health professionals all offering conflicting advice and differing diagnoses.

By now most clients are at the end of their tether; struggling to follow highly restrictive diets, are taking multiple supplements to offset the deficiencies resulting from these restrictive diets, and are no healthier (in fact most are worse now than when they started). This is not a happy place to be and I completely understand how most clients are terribly unhappy, overwhelmed and frustrated.

All in all one BIG MESS that I must untangle. This is where I would rather use my brain power and time to pull all the pieces of your health puzzle apart and then lay out a strategy for you to focus on for healing.

What do I suggest?

In relation to food intolerances and issues such as food related symptoms, IBS, chronic inflammatory bowel conditions, and allergy type symptoms I believe that most ‘problems’ go back to the gut.

Often the upstream problems are gluten related ‘damage’; parasitic, yeast or microbial dysbiosis (food and water-borne infection; antibiotic exposure, chemical and medication exposure etc.); compromised digestive function; inflamed, hyper-permeable or damaged gastrointestinal wall; suboptimal functioning of the support organs such as the liver and gallbladder; excessive stress resulting in sympathetic dominance and neuro-endocrine imbalances are a small example of how things can go wrong! And this is only in relation to the gastrointestinal system; remember that we are a complex organism where everything is linked!

So once I have had a look at all areas of your health in more detail we usually will look to more comprehensively assess the gut. Most healing protocols will prioritise the healing of the gastrointestinal system because if you can get the gut to a healthy place then most health issues resolve and almost all food issues resolve; and when there are remaining issues we then address these.

How?

In a nutshell we investigate the function of the gut, the integrity of the gut and function of accessory organs, and we assess the balance of the gut microbiota. Then depending on what we find (i.e. the results of tests) we will address the imbalances, restore optimal function, heal inflammation, support accessory organ function, and resolve any microbial and parasitic imbalances.

If you are suffering with any health issues that you suspect may be related to the health of the gut then please contact me and we can assess your current health and decide together on functional medicine tests should these be necessary and then put a diet and healing plan in place to restore full health and resolve any food related intolerances.

Love Andrea
