Recently I invested in a Nutribullet from Argos.

It cost me €129.99 and is far superior to the other less expensive option called the Magic Bullet. Why? Having used both I can say that the Nutribullet has a more powerful motor and hence is better at dealing with more challenging vegetables, nuts and seeds. It pulverizes everything!

If you would like to read more about the Nutribullet follow the link here (https://www.nutribullet.com/); I believe that in Ireland Brown Thomas and Argos supply the Nutribullet; I am unsure about other places. A quick search on Harvey Normal only showed me the Magic bullet.

I had been saving for a super dooper juicer and in the interim decided to trial the bullet and wow oh wow I would rate it as one of the best kitchen gadgets on the must have list and for the moment I will not be investing in a separate juicer?

Why? The Nutribullet thus far has demonstrated the following advantages:

  • Fast to use; once the juice is made you can simply remove the blade and add a cap.
  • Easy to clean; very!
  • Uses the whole vegetable and fruit and hence retains valuable fibre.
  • Unlike a blender can make smoothies from vegetables; even the tougher vegetables like kale and cabbage.
  • Smoothies do not tend to separate like juices do.
  • Powerful for grinding nuts and seeds.
  • Handy for making herb pesto’s and green herb dressings.
  • Useful for blitzing post-workout smoothies.
  • Handy for blitzing pasta sauces, hummus, home-made dips, baby food, and so on.
  • You can include nuts and seeds into the smoothie recipe and these will be pulverized in to create a tasty smoothie. This is important as the addition of these healthy fat containing foods aids the assimilation and absorption of key fat soluble nutrients contained in the vegetables and also creates a smooth juice that will not separate.
  • Makes your vegetables and fruit budget go farther as there is less waste; you produce more smoothie with fewer ingredients when compared to a juicer. Juicers tend to give you poor return for volumes of veggies. This is significant as fresh organic vegetables are pricey.

So I created this herb-fantasia to use up coriander that was about to pack it in and it tasted so good that I used it with several twists in multiple meals.

 

I am sure that you can come up with more ideas than the following but here are a few suggestions for using your herb blitz:

Suggestions for using Herb blitz in food and cooking:

  • Use as straight forward herb dressing or dip.
  • Stir through hummus or guacamole for depth of flavour.
  • Add to canned beans to make a fast dip (see below).
  • Toss through roasted vegetables before or after roasting.
  • Toss through steamed vegetables before serving.
  • Serve with fish or poultry.
  • Serve on top of steak.
  • Scrape on your crackers or toast instead of oil or butter.
  • Use to make herb bread by adding to your home-made bread mixture before baking.
  • Use to smother a baked potato, baked sweet potato or home-made fries.
  • Stir through yogurt, cottage cheese, or coconut milk to make a dip or dressing.
  • Use as an alternative to mayonnaise.

The list is endless and this herb blitz packs a powerful punch of nutrients for example plant-based phytonutrients (antioxidants), magnesium, beta carotene, vitamin K and Vitamin E so get adding this to your meals for nutrition clout and wonderful colour.

Herb Blitz

Ingredients:

  • Fresh coriander – lots; coriander should be the most dominant herb in this recipe. I suggest a whole plant or large container.
  • Fresh parsley – about one-quarter the amount of coriander (or more or less as you prefer)
  • Fresh rosemary – a few sprigs
  • Fresh thyme – a few sprigs
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons of ground turmeric – the more you add the stronger it will be. Turmeric is helpful for healing and inflammation so add as much as you feel intuitively that you need bearing in mind that it will start to be tasted in the herbs the more you add. I used 2 tablespoons and it wasn’t overbearing at all; the coriander flavour stood out well.
  • Extra Virgin olive oil – sufficient to allow the blender to blitz all the herbs and not too much so start low and add more as needed
  • Generous seasoning from Celtic, Atlantic or Himalayan salt and freshly cracked black pepper.

Blitzing herbs in the Nutribullet

Instructions:

  1. Remove any tough stems from the rosemary and thyme and wash all herbs (coriander, parsley, rosemary, and thyme) well.
  2. Dry in a salad spinner or dab dry with a paper towel to remove excess water.
  3. Place all your herbs, seasoning, ground turmeric and a decent glug of olive oil in the Nutri-Bullet and blitz.
  4. Blend until mixed through.
  5. You may need to add more olive oil if the mixture doesn’t move well. Avoid using too much oil as this dressing is more nutritious, more pungent in flavour and less high in calories when kept dense in consistency.
  6. How long you blitz this all depends on how smooth you make it; my first attempt was coarse and my second was smooth; I preferred the coarser texture.
  7. I stored this in a glass jam-jar and kept it in the fridge for use when needed.
  8. This herb blitz should keep well as I would assume that the olive oil will keep it preserved for at least a week or two but trust me you will use this up rather quickly!

I would expect that some fresh chili, smoky chipotle chili, paprika, garlic or sambal oelek would add a bit of extra oomph to this recipe.

I played it safe on round one. I actually recommend that you do add garlic as it is a wonderful healthy and flavoursome herb; my sensitive digestion just isn’t a fan!

Freshly blitzed herbs

Quick herby hummus

Here is a suggestion for a quick nutritious ‘hummus’ that uses your herb Blitz as a flavouring ingredient.

Blitz a can of beans such as chickpeas or other beans of choice with a generous amount of the Herb Blitz in a blender, using a hand-held blender or in the Nutri-Bullet.

Blitz to desired consistency…. Eh Voila….. Enjoy!

I am sure that this will also work well with avocado to make an herby guacamole.
